Integrated Approach to Risk-based Management

An integrated approach to risk-based management has a greater chance of success. An integrated plan deserves an integrated schedule. Poor integration will result in counter-intuitive, disconnected, or disjointed plans and schedules. It often translates to inadequate time, cost, and risk management.

Other problems spawned by ignoring integration are flawed quantitative schedule risk assessment, faulty critical path calculation, miscommunication, negatively affected productivity, and decreased achievability. The project might fail to meet its most important objectives.

It is best to include the commissioning and start-up phases of a construction project (and projects of a similar nature) in the integrated schedule. A well-experienced project manager recognizes that the downstream requirements drive the front end. Let us lay out your plan and schedule sequence with the end in mind.

For this reason, the commissioning window of activities should be part of the overall schedule because it drives construction, while construction drives engineering, modularization, fabrication, and procurement. It is clear that the operation effectively calls the shot-affecting sequence to a more considerable degree than any other group.

Risk-based Management

While many of us understand that Risk-based management involves identifying, assessing, planning, and prioritizing potential risks impacting a project’s success, an integrated approach means considering all aspects of the project—such as scope, time, cost, and quality—simultaneously or in combinations when managing these risks.

We will develop easy-to-understand strategies that address multiple risk factors simultaneously, leading to more effective and efficient risk mitigation. The absence or lack of coordination involving multiple tasks causes misalignment, raising concerns about the project’s success. Disconnected plans and schedules often translate to poor time management, cost, and risks.

An integrated plan ensures that all project elements are aligned, providing a strong and confident understanding of the project’s future. It has a detailed project schedule that aligns with the overall plan and the approved strategy. An integrated plan and schedule help us create a clear path to follow, ensuring that the criticality of the activities is accurate. We will complete the work in the correct order at the right time. Proper integration, plans, and schedules will make the project efficient, cohesive, and connected.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you see this subject on integration?
